What You Need to Know in Advance of Travel.

stop.jpgAll travelers should familiarize themselves with conditions at their destination that could affect their health (high altitude or pollution, types of medical facilities, required immunizations, availability of required pharmaceuticals.

Insurance, Medicare & Medicaid, Medical Evacuation

If your insurance policy does not cover you abroad, it is a good idea to consider purchasing a short-term policy that does.  There are health insurance policies designed specifically to cover travel.  Many travel agents and private companies offer insurance plans that will cover health care expenses incurred overseas including emergency services such as medical evacuations.

Bringing Medications or Filling Prescriptions Abroad

A traveler going abroad with a preexisting medical problem should carry a letter from the attending physician, describing the medical condition and any prescription medications, including the generic names of prescribed drugs.  Any medications being carried overseas should be left in their original containers and be clearly labeled. Travelers should check with the foreign embassy of the country they are visiting to make sure any required medications are not considered to be illegal narcotics.

If you wear eyeglasses, take an extra pair with you.  Pack medicines and extra eyeglasses in your hand luggage so they will be available in case your checked Coleman luggage is lost.  To be extra secure, pack a backup supply of medicines and an additional pair of eyeglasses in your checked luggage.

If you have allergies, reactions to certain medications, foods, or insect bites, or other unique medical problems, consider wearing a “medical alert” bracelet.  You may also wish to carry a letter from your physician explaining required treatment should you become ill.

  Places to Receive Mail

If you will be abroad for an extended period, you may want to arrange for the delivery of your mail.  Some banks and international credit card companies handle mail for customers at their overseas branches.  In addition, post offices in many countries will hold mail for travelers under their General Delivery services.  U.S. Embassies and Consulates do not handle private mail.  Check with the embassy of your destination country to see if that will be possible there.  A listing of foreign embassies and consulates in the U.S. is available on the Department of State’s website.   Foreign embassy and consulate contact information can also be found on the Country Specific Information for each country.

I hope you find this information useful and helps you in planning your next extended vacation.

What to do about lost luggage.

Tuscany 3 Piece CollectionEventually, if your luggage doesn’t arrive, you and the airline will have to face up to an ugly truth – your luggage has disappeared.

First thing you have to do is put in a claim, itemize the contents and value including the cost of your suitcase.  Don’t exaggerate because if you do it can be very embarrassing if they find your suitcase and what you told them isn’t true.

It will almost certainly take more than a week for your red luggage set to be deemed lost, and perhaps as much as a month.   It also depends on the airlines how this is handled, whether it was a domestic flight, international flight etc.   If you require more detailed information go to google and type in lost luggage.

Wherever you’re headed, you’ll want to feel healthy and strong.
Here are some helpful tips for not being under the weather when you’re
 going above the clouds.

Here are just a few precautions you can take ahead of time:

Make sure your immunizations are current.
If possible, delay your trip if you’re not feeling well.
If you’re prone to air sickness, ask for a window seat over the wing.
If you have any health questions, or if you suffer from a chronic
ailment, motion sickness, or fear of flying, ask for advice from your
 physician.
Stress is bad for you. Reduce stress by allowing plenty of time to
check in and reach your departure gate.
Always carry your medication with you—never pack it in baggage you’re
 planning to check.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes for your flight.

Sexy Caddies It Weren’t

golf bag travel coverMy husband loves to golf and it almost ruined our marriage. It’s not what you think; an affair with a sexy, young caddy or too many cans of beer on the course. Our problem was much worse I must admit. I’ll be straight with you – I almost ruined his favorite pastime by polishing his gold clubs with jewelry cleaner. Yeah I know, golf clubs aren’t diamond earrings, but what did he expect – they were dirty! When Mitzel discovered that I had cleaned his precious clubs, he accused me of trying to turn him into a girl. He actually said, “should I put on a tutu and some lipstick?”

Our marriage suffered badly. For nearly two hours we didn’t even hum together (one of our favorite pastimes) and later that night he didn’t even feed me my favorite snack: sardines. Truly, I felt lost. That night I had a dream that I would buy him a golf bag travel cover to make up for my indiscretion. The next day I did and Mitzel cried tears of joy. That night he met me on the couch with sardines in hand! He even dipped them in my favorite condiment: ketchup! Love was in the air that night!

Souvenirs From Across the Seas

posted by Carry_On
February 1, 2010

travelOne of my favorite things about traveling is the souvenirs I bring home.  I discovered on my first international trip recently that there are a lot of governmental regulations regarding what can be brought back into the United States in your Best Coleman Carryon Luggage.  Check the U. S. Customs official website before your trip!  There are strict guidelines for products related in any way to wildlife, particularly involving endangered species.  Foreign or domestic law will often prohibit import or export of these items, and travelers face a fine and confiscation if you attempt to bypass the rules.  Prohibited goods include all products made from sea turtles; most types of coral, whether mounted in jewelry or loose; most crocodile or caiman leather; furs from spotted cats or marine mammals; feathers and feather products from wild birds; and all ivory, including rhinoceros tusks as well as tusks of African or Asian elephants.

There is one notable exception that often involves the import of ivory.  Ivory may be imported into the United States if you can prove it is at least 100 years old.  You will be required to present written documentation to that authenticates the age of the item.  Other antiques containing wildlife products will have similar procedures to verify age before being approved for U. S. import, and other requirements for antiques may apply in addition to proof of age.  For specific guidelines and the most current regulations, contact the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

A Touching Story-”The Old Phone”

posted by Travel-a-lot
February 10, 2009

old-phone-1                          When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember the polished, old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked to it.

………Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person. Her name was ‘Information Please’ and there was nothing she did not know. Information Please could supply anyone’s number and the correct time…………My personal experience with the genie-in-a-bottle came one day while my Mother was visiting a neighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer, the pain was terrible, but there seemed no point in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy……………I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. The telephone! Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the Parlor and dragged it to the landing climbing up; I unhooked the receiver in the parlor and held it to my ear………..‘Information, please,’ I said into the mouthpiece just above my head. A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear………….

‘Information.’……..‘I hurt my finger,’ I wailed into the phone, the tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.      ‘Isn’t your mother home?’ came the question. ‘Nobody’s home but me,’ I blubbered.      ‘Are you bleeding?’ the voice asked.  ‘No,’ I replied. ‘I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts.’   ‘Can you open the icebox?’ she asked.        I said I could……‘Then chip off a little bit of ice and hold it to your finger,’ said the voice.

After that, I called ‘Information Please’ for everything. I asked her for help with my geography, and she told me where Philadelphia was. She helped me with my math. She told me my pet chipmunk that I had caught in the park just the day before, would eat fruit and nuts………….Then, there was the time Petey, our pet canary, died. I called, ‘Information Please,’ and told her the sad story. She listened, and then said things grown-ups say to soothe a child. But I was not consoled. I asked her, ‘Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring Joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?’……………….She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, ‘ Wayne, always remember that there are other worlds to sing in.’…..Somehow I felt better…..Another day I was on the telephone, ‘Information Please.’………….‘Information,’ said in that so familiar voice…….‘How do I spell fix?’ I asked.

old-phone-2

All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. When I was nine years old, we moved across the country to Boston. I missed my friend very much. ‘Information Please’ belonged in that old wooden box back home and I somehow never thought of trying the shiny new phone that sat on the table in the hall. As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me…………Often, in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy.

A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in  Seattle  I had about a half-hour or so between planes. I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown Operator and said, ‘Information Please.’……….Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so well. ‘Information.’……..I hadn’t planned this, but I heard myself saying, ‘Could you please tell me how to spell fix?’…….There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, ‘I guess your finger must have healed by now.’………….I laughed, ‘So it’s really you,’ I said. ‘I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time?’…………‘I wonder,’ she said, ‘if you know how much your call meant to me. I never had any children and I used to look forward to your calls.’………………I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister………….‘Please do,’ she said. ‘Just ask for Sally.’

old-phone-3

Three months later I was back in Seattle  a different voice answered:  Information.’ I asked for Sally………‘Are you a friend?’ she said………..‘Yes, a very old friend,’ I answered……‘I’m sorry to have to tell you this,’ she said. ‘Sally had been working part-time the last few years because she was sick. She died five weeks ago.’………Before I could hang up she said,  ‘Wait a minute, did you say your name was Wayne?’

‘Yes.’ I answered……………‘Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called. Let me read it to you.’ The note said, ‘Tell him there are other worlds to sing in. He’ll know what I mean.’………………I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant.

Never underestimate the impression you may make on others………..Whose life have you touched today?…………Why not pass this on? I just did….Lifting you on eagle’s wings. May you find the joy and peace you long for…………..Life is a journey … NOT a guided tour. So don’t miss the ride and have a great time going around.  You don’t get a second shot at it.

I loved this story and just had to pass it on. I hope you enjoy it and get a blessing from it just as I did.

So…….. go on that vacation you have always dreamed about…………then go to the luggage store and purchase that special travelware you have always wanted …………but mostly…………ENJOY LIFE!
